ABAQUS, originally stylized as ABAQUS, was developed by Hibbitt, Karlsson & Sorensen, Inc. (HKS), founded in January 1978 by Dr. David Hibbitt, Dr. Bengt Karlsson, and Dr. Paul Sorensen. Its logo, a stylized abacus, marked the launch date of February 1, 1978. Initially created for Westinghouse Hanford to analyze nuclear fuel rods, version 1 debuted in 1978, followed by version 3 in 1979. Focused on nonlinear structural and heat transfer analysis, it was distributed via CDC’s Cybernet. Key releases include ABAQUS/Explicit (1992), parallel version 5.4 (1995), and ABAQUS/CAE (1999). HKS became ABAQUS, Inc. in 2002, and Dassault Systèmes acquired it in 2005 for $413 million. Hibbitt retired in 2001, Karlsson and Sorensen in 2002. Headquartered in Providence, Rhode Island, until 2014, it’s now in Johnston, Rhode Island.
